What a tool has to answer

Most product research tools answer the first question below. Our own measurements of US Facebook product ads and AliExpress best-sellers show why the others decide whether you make money.

24 days

was the age of the median US Facebook product ad. Most product tests are switched off within a month, so an ad you find is usually a test, not a winner.

The figure and how we measured it
20.1%

of US Facebook product ads had been running for 90 days or more. An advertiser rarely keeps paying for an ad that loses money, so how long an ad has run tells you more than how many likes it has.

The figure and how we measured it
62.3%

of the 621 AliExpress products we track with 10,000 or more sold don’t survive the cost of the ad that sells them. Selling well and paying after the ad are different things.

This week’s figures

So a product research tool should help you answer four questions

  • Is anyone buying it? Order counts and store sales.
  • Is it advertised, and for how long? An ad that has run for months is usually paying for itself.
  • Does it still pay after the ad? The product, shipping, import duty, the card fee and the ad that sold it, against your price.
  • Can it reach buyers fast? Where it ships from and how long delivery takes.

Pick by situation

In our view most sellers need two tools at most. These are the pairs we would start with.

Your first store on a small budget

Find candidates with the free Meta Ad Library and AliExpress order counts, then check each one in SpotPeaks before you spend on ads. One paid tool is enough at this stage.

Each tool, honestly

What each one does well, where it falls short, what it costs and who should pick it. SpotPeaks gets the same treatment as the rest.

Minea

Ad research across Facebook, TikTok and Pinterest

Minea is the pick for researching ads across several platforms at once, with a credit system that suits people who search often.

What it does well

Strong ad filters across the major social platforms, a Chrome extension, and one place to see an ad, its engagement and the store behind it. Premium adds TikTok, Pinterest and shop analysis in the same interface.

Where it falls short

Searches use credits, so heavy use means a higher plan. TikTok and Pinterest ads start on Premium at $99 a month, and it shows what is being advertised rather than whether it still pays after the ad.

Price
Starter $49 a month; Premium $99 a month; Business $399 a month; about 30% less a month on yearly billing
Free trial
Free credits to try it
Pick it if
You live in ad libraries and want Facebook, TikTok and Pinterest in one tool.

PiPiADS

TikTok ad research

PiPiADS is the pick when TikTok is your main ad channel, with a TikTok-first ad library that also covers Facebook ads and TikTok Shop products.

What it does well

Deep TikTok ad research with filters by country, niche and engagement, ad tracking, and product research for TikTok Shop in the same account.

Where it falls short

Searches and ad details use credits, and its AI content tools are a separate add-on.

Price
Basic $49 a month; Advanced $99; Flexible from $180; Enterprise $900; about 30% less on yearly billing
Free trial
Free trial with credits
Pick it if
Your ads run on TikTok and you want to study what already works there.

Dropship.io

Tracking what Shopify stores sell

Dropship.io is the pick for tracking what competing Shopify stores and TikTok Shop sellers sell, with sales and revenue estimates for each.

What it does well

Good at answering "what is this store selling and how much", with a product library, a competitor tracker and a Chrome extension. Plans share the same tools and differ mainly in credits and limits.

Where it falls short

Searches and lookups use credits on every plan, and sales and revenue figures are estimates rather than store data.

Price
Basic $39 a month; Standard $59 a month; Premium $99 a month; $26, $34 and $49 a month on yearly billing
Free trial
Free trial
Pick it if
You already have competitors in mind and want to see what they sell.

Koala Inspector

A quick look inside any Shopify store

Koala Inspector is the pick for a fast, free look inside a single Shopify store while you browse it: best-sellers, apps, theme, traffic estimates and the ads tied to the store.

What it does well

Free to start and quick: open a store, click the extension, and see what it sells and how it is built.

Where it falls short

It works one store at a time, in Chrome, on Shopify only, and its revenue figures are estimates.

Price
Free with 15 tokens a month; Premium $22 a month with 220 tokens and tracking for up to 50 shops
Free trial
Free plan
Pick it if
You want to inspect a competitor's store in seconds without a subscription.

Kalodata

TikTok Shop data

Kalodata is the pick for selling on TikTok Shop itself, with sales estimates for products, shops, creators, videos and livestreams.

What it does well

Built around TikTok Shop alone, so its creator and livestream data goes further than general tools, which matters if you sell through TikTok creators.

Where it falls short

It covers TikTok Shop only, and its figures are estimates built from public TikTok signals.

Price
Starter from about $46 a month; Professional about $130; Enterprise higher; the web pricing page needs a login
Free trial
7 days free, no card
Pick it if
You sell on TikTok Shop and work with creators.

SpotPeaks

Knowing whether a product still pays after ad costs

SpotPeaks is the pick when the question is whether a product will still make money after you pay for the ads, because it works out the price to charge and what you keep per sale for every product it shows.

What it does well

Every product comes with the full cost of selling it in the US: the item, shipping, import duty, the card fee and the ad cost of one buyer, so you see what you keep before you spend anything. It also reads the stores already selling a product and how long their ads have run, and turns a pick into a launch plan with the ad copy written.

Where it falls short

It is a newer tool, so it does not have years of ad history yet. It does not fulfill orders, and its prices and ad costs are worked out for selling in the US, so sellers aiming at other markets will need to adjust.

Price
Research $29.99 a month; Launch $49.99 a month or $419 a year; Launch Plus $69.99 a month or $587 a year
Free trial
7 days free on Launch and Launch Plus; none on Research
Pick it if
You are choosing your first or next product and want to know it pays before you spend on ads.

Sell The Trend

An all-in-one start: research, store and fulfillment

Sell The Trend is the pick for an all-in-one start, combining AI product research with a store builder, one-click import and order fulfillment.

What it does well

One subscription covers finding a product, importing it to your store and fulfilling orders, which suits someone who wants fewer tools. Its AI research ranks products by trend.

Where it falls short

The ad research sits on the higher plans: Facebook ad winners start on Essential and TikTok on Pro. The Lite plan covers product research without the ad tools.

Price
Lite $29.97 a month; Essential $49.97; Pro $99.97; Pro+ $299.97; about a third less on yearly billing
Free trial
14 days free (card required)
Pick it if
You want one subscription from research through to fulfilled orders.

AutoDS

Importing products and automating orders

AutoDS is the pick for automating the work after research: importing products, keeping prices and stock in sync, and fulfilling orders across many suppliers and stores.

What it does well

The strongest of the group at running a store day to day: automatic order fulfillment, price and stock updates, and support for many suppliers and marketplaces.

Where it falls short

Product research is an add-on on top of a plan, plans are priced per selling channel, and the plan limits count product variants rather than products.

Price
Shopify plans from $26.90 a month (Import 200), $39.90 (Starter 500) and $66.90 (Advanced 1K), priced per selling channel; add-ons extra; about a quarter less on yearly billing
Free trial
3 days for $0.99
Pick it if
You already sell and want orders, prices and stock to run themselves.

One product, checked this week

Every tool on this page can show you a product people are buying. The question that decides whether you make money is the one most of them leave to you: what is left after the product, the shipping, the import duty, the card fee and the ad that sold it.

This is a real product from this week’s SpotPeaks board, run through every check. It changes when the board does. The name is hidden here; members see it, with the supplier listing and the stores already selling it.

Free ways to research

You can find candidates without paying anything. What these don't tell you is whether a product pays after the ad.

Meta Ad Library

Every active Facebook and Instagram ad, searchable by keyword or advertiser. Sort by how long an ad has run: an ad that has run for months is usually paying for itself.

TikTok Creative Center

TikTok's own lists of top ads and trending products, free with a TikTok account.

Google Trends

Whether interest in a product is rising, flat or seasonal, and where.

AliExpress order counts

Each listing shows how many have sold. Sort by orders to see what already moves, then check the price you would pay.

How we compared

Every fact on this page was checked on October 3, 2026. We re-check every tool each quarter.

What we compared

What each tool covers, whether it estimates profit after ad costs for each product, the price of the plan that has those features, and the free trial. We left out ratings: we make one of these tools, and a score from us would not be worth much.

Where the facts come from

Each tool’s own pricing page, app store listing or help center where we could reach it, otherwise several recent independent reviews that agreed. Anything we could not confirm is left out rather than guessed.

Common questions

What is the best dropshipping product research tool?

It depends on the job. For ad research across platforms, Minea. For what Shopify stores sell, Dropship.io. For TikTok Shop, Kalodata. For knowing whether a product still pays after ad costs, SpotPeaks, which we make. Most sellers need two tools at most.

Is there a free dropshipping product research tool?

The Meta Ad Library, TikTok Creative Center, Google Trends and AliExpress order counts are free, and Koala Inspector has a free plan for looking inside Shopify stores. They help you find candidates; none of them tells you what a product leaves you after ad costs.

Do I need a product research tool to start dropshipping?

No, but you need the answers one gives you: whether people buy the product, whether it is advertised and for how long, and whether it pays after the ad. You can get the first two free. The third is where most new stores lose money: 62.3% of the best-sellers we track don't survive the cost of the ad that sells them.

Minea or Dropship.io?

Minea if you research ads across Facebook, TikTok and Pinterest; Dropship.io if you want to see what competing Shopify stores sell and follow them over time. Both use credits, and Dropship.io starts lower, at $39 a month against $49 for Minea Starter.

How much should a beginner spend on tools?

One paid tool to start, usually under $50 a month, plus the free options. Put the rest into testing ads: that is where you learn whether a product works.

Check a product before you pay for its ads

SpotPeaks prices every product with the item, shipping, US import duty, the card fee and one buyer at US ad rates, so you see what you keep before you spend anything.
